Postdocs and PhD positions, ENVIRON, Estonia

10 postdoctoral positions (full-time, duration 2-3 years) are opened in the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Environmental Adaptation ENVIRON.

The main focus of the CoE is to address environmental adaptation from molecular mechanisms to ecosystem functioning, and feedbacks between plant and ecosystem adaptation and climate change.

The CoE involves five research teams from three Estonian universities:

  • Plant Physiology and Biosphere-atmosphere Interactions (Ülo Niinemets, Estonian Univ. of Life Sciences)
  • Plant Signal Research Group (Hannes Kollist, Univ. of Tartu)
  • Plant-pathogen Interactions (Erkki Truve, Tallinn Technical Univ.)
  • Plant Ecophysiology (Anu Sõber, Univ. of Tartu)
  • Landscape Ecology & Ecotechnology (Ülo Mander, Univ. of Tartu),

 - altogether involving over 50 senior staff members and more than 40 PhD students.

To meet the CoE objectives, excellent lab facilities are available, and further large-scale ecosystem infrastructures such as SMEAR are developed.

Description

CoE ENVIRON invites applications for the following positions:

  1. postdoc with previous training in plant biology to study molecular mechanisms of abiotic stress induced volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Ülo Niinemets, Estonian Univ. of Life Sciences, Ylo.niinemets@emu.ee
  2. postdoc to address natural variation of stress-induced VOC emissions among Arabidopsis ecotypes with the aim to identify critical quantitative trait loci (QTL) and eventually genes/proteins regulating plant VOC emissions in various stressful climatic conditions. Mikael Brosche, Univ. of Tartu, mikael.brosche@ut.ee
  3. postdoc with previous training in microscopy and cell imaging to study adaptation of structure and function of water transport pathways in trees (in light of global climate change). Anu Sõber, Univ. of Tartu, anu.sober@ut.ee
  4. postdoc to address environmental stimuli-induced guard cell signalling for regulation of plant gas-exchange. The highly motivated candidates with previous training in plant biology, ideally in single cell imaging and electrophysiology will be favoured. Hannes Kollist, Univ. of Tartu, hannes.kollist@ut.ee
  5. postdoc with cell biology experience to study plant actin-myosin system. Erkki Truve, Tallinn Univ. of Technology, erkki.truve@ttu.ee
  6. postdoc with experience in analyzing deep sequencing data generated by different platforms (Solexa/Illumina and 454), including analysis of small noncoding RNAs. Additional experience in different bioinformatic fields will be regarded as positiive. Erkki Truve, Tallinn Univ. of Technology, erkki.truve@ttu.ee
  7. postdoc with experience in field photosynthesis and transpiration measurements to study responses of plant photosynthesis and VOC emissions to long-term changes in humidity, CO2 and temperature. Anu Sõber, Univ. of Tartu, anu.sober@ut.ee
  8. micrometeorologist to study CO2/H2O and trace gas fluxes from forested ecosystems and wetlands. Ülo Mander, Univ. of Tartu, ulo.mander@ut.ee
  9. postdoc with previous experience in microbiology to investigate soil metagenomics and determine functional genes for denitrification and methanogenesis, and study temperature-dependent modifications in composition of decomposing organisms in soil. Ülo Mander, Univ. of Tartu, ulo.mander@ut.ee
  10. postdoc with previous experience in mathematical modelling and grid systems to study global change effects on biogeochemical cycles at ecosystem, landscape and global scales. Ülo Niinemets, Estonian Univ. of Life Sciences, ylo.niinemets@emu.ee

The positions include opportunities for collaboration with other partners of the Centre of Excellence. Applications (CV, list of publications, a list of your experimental expertise, a summary of research interests, contact information) should be sent to the respective team leader.

The applications will be reviewed continously and the positions will remain open until suitable candidate is found, current deadline is 2 April 2012.
