PhD Fellowships, Dublin, Ireland: deadline 15.02.2012

UCD School of Biology and Environmental Science, University College Dublin, Belfield, Dublin 4, Ireland - PhD Fellowships available through the Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET)

There is currently a post-graduate fellowship scheme open for applications by IRCSET (www.ircset.ie; see ‘Postgraduate Scholarship Scheme’). This is a scheme open to all Nationalities for students who would like to carry out a PhD project at an Irish University.

If you are interested in carrying out a PhD project in the plant/environmental sciences under this scheme at the UCD School of Biology and Environmental Sciences, please contact (email) any of the research group leaders in Plant Science listed below, together with their main research interests.

The deadline for applications for this years’ funding round is 15th Feb 2011. Successful candidates will be informed in April and can commence their fellowship in Sep/Oct 2011.

Dr. Fiona Doohan (Plant Molecular Pathology; fiona.doohan@ucd.ie). Plant stress biology & biofuels research, plant pathology, plant cell signalling.

Dr. Wieland Fricke (Plant Physiology; wieland.fricke@ucd.ie). Aquaporins, plant water relations and mineral nutrition, salinity stress, leaf growth, root water uptake, single cell analyses such as cell-pressure probe, cuticle development

Dr. Paul McCabe (Plant Development; paul.mccabe@ucd.ie). Programmed cell death, abiotic and/or heat stress, somatic embyrogenesis, cell and tissue culture.

Dr. Anika Mostaert (Phycology and Marine Botany; anika.mostaert@ucd.ie). Marine adhesives; algal ultrastructure; nanomechanics and nanoscale bioimaging; imaging techniques such as electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy

Prof. Bruce Osborne (Plant Ecophysiology; bruce.osborne@ucd.ie). Climate change and ecosystem greenhouse gas emissions; bioenergy production; invasive plants; cyanobacterial symbioses
