International PhD program in Plant Sciences - Plants for Life 2018 - six fellowships available

Application for Research Fellowships within the International PhD Program Plants for Life

Six positions are open for national (two) and mixed (four) PhD fellowships under the framework of the International PhD program “Plants for Life” (, Ref. PD/00035/2013, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia.

Scientific Area: Plant Sciences

Academic degree: Applicants must hold an MSc in biological or agronomical sciences or related fields.

Work Plan:

More than twenty research laboratories from Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA), Instituto de Biologia Experimental e Tecnológica (IBET), Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL), Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), VIB-Plant Systems Biology-Gent University (VIB-PSB), Max Planck Institute of Molecular Plant Physiology (MPI-PP), The Sainsbury Laboratory Cambridge University (SLCU), and The Sainsbury Laboratory (TSL) are associated with the Plants for Life PhD Program. After selecting their PhD supervisor(s) among these laboratories, each student will elaborate his/her PhD project.

Applicable Law and Regulations: Law 40/2004 of 18 August (“Estatuto do Bolseiro de Investigação Científica”), changed and republished by Ordinance 202/2013 of 27 August and changed by Ordinance 233/2012 of 29 October and by Law 12/2013 of 29 January and by Ordinance 89/2013 of 9 July; Fellowship Regulations of Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia, I.P. – 2013; Fellowship Regulations of Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica António Xavier (ITQB NOVA).

Working place: The institutions where the PhD student can perform his/her PhD project are ITQB NOVA, FCUL, IBET, IGC, INIAV, MPI-PP, SLCU, VIB-PSB, and TSL.

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowships are available for 12 months, renewable for a maximum of 48 months. Mixed fellowships include a period of up to 24 months abroad (within the 48 months).

Stipend amount: The stipend for national and mixed fellowships will be according to the values of FCT Scientific Fellowships (national or mixed) (

Selection procedure: Based on the academic and scientific curriculum vitae and the personal statement, the Selection Committee will elaborate a shortlist of candidates to be invited for a scientific presentation and interview. The Selection Committee will reach a final ranking of applicants based on the written application (50%), the presentation (25%) and the interview (25%).
